Duties of the Editor-in-Chief include:

Publicity

  • webpage design and maintenance
  • write blog posts and send out newsletter, e.g. to announce calls for submissions, issue releases, events, etc.
  • maintain pages on social networking sites
  • request to post announcements on literary blogs
  • request forwarding of announcements to email lists
  • request inclusion in newsletters
  • request being included in online listings of small presses and literary journals
  • trade links with other literary websites
  • trade announcements with other journals to place in Nerve Lantern or on the website
  • email college English departments
  • contact libraries
  • design, print, and distribute fliers
  • ask volunteers in other cities to put up fliers
  • ask writer contacts to spread the word
  • organize release parties and performance events

Bookmaking

  • read and research writers
  • solicit work from amazing writers and artists
  • read, reply to, and select submissions
  • email and mail correspondence
  • book design and layout
  • edit and proof read issue content
  • ask questions about submission edits, send proofs to contributors, make changes to content, receive the final ok from contributors
  • select materials: paper, thread, ink cartridges, envelopes, etc.
  • print pages via inkjet printer
  • fold pages by hand
  • bind books by hand
  • take books to the print shop to be trimmed

Distribution & Sales

  • mail free copies to contributors
  • mail copies to libraries
  • process orders, mail copies
  • sell copies at release parties and performance events
  • research other ways to distribute and sell
  • budget and keep accounts

Community

  • add links to the Community page
  • collaborate with writers to help promote their projects
  • encourage contributors to network and collaborate
  • request contributor bios for issue and website
  • organize release parties and performance events
  • create child projects, e.g. The Nerve Lantern Challenge
  • ask volunteers to help out as temporary Nerve Lantern staff members
